Early Life
Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, was born on December 9, 1962, in Ukana, Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. Raised in a humble background, he exhibited leadership qualities and resilience from an early age. His educational journey began at Methodist Primary School, Ukana, before proceeding to Federal Government College, Port Harcourt, where he excelled academically and in extracurricular activities.
He later attended the University of Calabar, where he studied Law and earned his LL.B degree. During his university days, he was actively involved in student leadership and advocacy, foreshadowing his future in public service. Akpabio was called to the Nigerian Bar and briefly practiced law before venturing into corporate leadership and eventually politics.
Entrepreneurship & Business
Before venturing into politics, Senator Akpabio built a solid career in the corporate sector. He served as the National Publicity Secretary of the Association of Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) and later became the Managing Director/CEO of EMIS Telecoms Limited, a telecom company that played a key role in Nigeria’s early telecommunications growth. His leadership in the private sector honed his skills in management, strategic planning, and economic development, which he later applied in governance.
In addition, Akpabio has been actively involved in promoting economic empowerment, supporting local businesses, and advocating for investments in key sectors such as infrastructure, energy, and education. His focus on sustainable development continues to drive his engagements in public service and entrepreneurship.
Political Journey
As Governor of Akwa Ibom State (2007–2015)
During his tenure as the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Akpabio spearheaded a landmark modernization agenda known as the “Uncommon Transformation”, which turned the state into a model for development in Nigeria. His key achievements include:
- Constructing world-class infrastructure, including the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Ibom Tropicana Entertainment Centre, and multiple flyovers and dual-carriageway roads.
- Revolutionizing education by introducing free and compulsory primary and secondary education, upgrading schools, and providing scholarships for students.
- Establishing the Ibom Power Plant, which improved electricity supply in the state.
- Creating the Ibom E-Library, the first digital library in West Africa.

As Minister of Niger Delta Affairs (2019–2022)
As the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Akpabio focused on restructuring the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and accelerating key infrastructure projects. His achievements include:
- Reforming the NDDC to enhance transparency, accountability, and efficiency in project execution.
- Pushing for the completion of the East-West Road, a crucial economic and transport corridor in the Niger Delta region.
- Championing youth empowerment initiatives to tackle unemployment and militancy.

As Senate President (2023–Present)
