About this event
The New Yam Festival (Iri Ji Ohu) is a cherished cultural event among the Igbo people, marking the harvest of new yams and the beginning of a new agricultural year.

Celebrated with colorful masquerade performances, cultural dances, feasting, and rituals, the festival serves as a time of thanksgiving to the gods and ancestors for a bountiful harvest. The highlight is when the Igwe (king) or village elder publicly slices the first yam, symbolizing prosperity and abundance. In some communities, the celebration lasts a whole day, while in many places it may last a week or more.

Visitors can expect vibrant parades, traditional attires, and an authentic experience of Igbo hospitality and heritage.
