He is a devoted family man, married to Doris Amakiriba Deeyah, with one son. He is a man of faith, actively participating in the Missionary Diocese of Ogoni, Anglican Communion, Church of Nigeria. In his leisure time, He enjoys listening to the Word and gospel music, swimming, playing and watching football, playing table tennis, and indulging in comedy on television.

Leadership and Honors

Emmanuel Nwiika Deeyah’s leadership journey is characterized by a diverse array of positions and responsibilities, showcasing his commitment to community, culture, and academic excellence.

In his current role, Emmanuel serves as the President of KAGOTE, the apex socio-cultural organization of the Ogoni ethnic nationality in Rivers State. This position reflects his dedication to preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of the Ogoni people.

Emmanuel’s involvement in the Anglican Communion is noteworthy, as he holds the position of Pioneer Lay Secretary in the Missionary Diocese of Ogoni. This role underscores his commitment to the church’s mission and community outreach.

From 2003 – 2011, He served on the Governing Board of the Chad Basin Development Authority, a parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Rural Development. 

His contributions to the University of Port Harcourt are marked by his role as the Sports, Social/Welfare Secretary of the Hall Management Committee at Aminu Kano Hall during the 1986/1987 academic session. Notably, he took on this responsibility in the absence of a functional Students Union Government, showcasing his proactive approach to addressing organizational gaps.

Emmanuel’s leadership journey began early in his academic life, where he served as the Assistant Secretary during the 1984/85 session and later ascended to the position of President for the 1986/87 session of the National Association of Microbiology Students at the University of Port Harcourt. His active participation and leadership in student affairs laid the foundation for his future contributions to broader community and political spheres.

In the realm of sports, Emmanuel demonstrated his leadership prowess as the Vice-Captain of the Swimming Team at the University of Port Harcourt from 1984 to 1988. This role not only showcased his dedication to excellence but also fostered a spirit of teamwork and camaraderie.

 

 

Emmanuel’s exceptional contributions have been recognized through various honours and awards. He was conferred with the Fellowship of the Nigerian Society for Microbiology (fNSM) in November 2023, a testament to his significant contributions to the field.This is a high academic honour and achievement.

The Distinguished Service Star of Rivers State (DSSRS), awarded in May 2023 by the Government of Rivers State, is a prestigious honour recognizing Emmanuel’s meritorious service to the state. This award reflects the impact of his leadership and contributions to the development of Rivers State.

Emmanuel’s international recognition includes being named an Honorary State Representative to the House of Representatives in the State of Louisiana, USA, in 2000. This honour highlights the global acknowledgement of his contributions to public service and leadership.

In 2008, Emmanuel received the Knight of St. Christopher (KSC) title from the Niger Delta Diocese, Anglican Communion, Church of Nigeria. This ecclesiastical recognition underscores his commitment to Christian values and his significant role within the church.

His appointment as a Justice of The Peace (JP) by the Rivers State Government further exemplifies Emmanuel’s standing in the community and the trust placed in his commitment to justice and fairness.

Emmanuel’s longstanding commitment to education and community is further underscored by his Life Membership in the National Union of Rivers State Students, University of Port Harcourt Chapter, a recognition conferred in 1988.

Education & Early Career

He holds a B.Sc. (Hon) in Microbiology from the University of Port Harcourt, graduating in 1988. His academic journey includes St. Pius Xth College in Bodo, Gokana LGA, and State School in Gwara, Khana LGA. He ventured into the workforce with roles such as a Quality Control Technologist at Agro-Niger Foods & Products Nig. Ltd. in Port Harcourt and an NYSC position at General Hospital, Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State.

Courses & Study Tours

Emmanuel Nwiika Deeyah has dedicated himself to continuous learning, participating in courses and study tours that have enriched his knowledge and skills. One notable Religious learning was the Basic Certificate Course (BCC) at the Word of Faith Bible Institute (WOFBI), held from August 11 to 19, 2014, at Living Faith Church, GRA Phase 3, Port-Harcourt.

His quest for knowledge extended to the prestigious Harvard Kennedy School, where he underwent the Executive Education program titled “Creating Collaborative Solutions” in October 2010. This transformative experience took place at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Emmanuel further honed his skills in Crisis Management and Contingency Planning through a program by Global Training Consulting, UK, conducted at Sheraton Deira, Dubai, UAE, in July 2010.

As an advocate for legislative democracy, he engaged in various study tours, including visits to The Parliament of India (Lok Sabha) in March 2010 and The National Parliament of Thailand, coupled with a study visit to King Prajadhipok’s Institute in Bangkok, Thailand, from November 16 to 19, 2009.

His commitment to democratic values took him to The Senate of The State of California in Sacramento, California, USA, in September 2009. The journey of learning continued with programs like “Leading Strategic Change” at RIPA, UK, from October 6 to 17, 2008, and a comparative legislative practice at the Portuguese Parliament from June 3 to 14, 2008.

He also delved into the complexities of international upstream petroleum licensing at the Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law & Policy (CEPMLP), University of Dundee, Scotland, UK, in May 2008. He participated in a comprehensive legislative practice program at Thames Valley University, London Slough Campus, from November 17 to December 1, 2007.

His educational journey included sessions on legislative budgeting, financial analysis, and evaluation at The Management School, London, from June 5 to 16, 2006, as well as legislative practice, legislative drafting, and legal procedures at Thames Valley University, London Slough Campus, in July 2005.

Emmanuel engaged in Continuing Professional Development focused on maritime issues at The Institute of Marine Engineering Science & Technology, UK, in November 2003. Additionally, he participated in a program on strengthening democratic values through parliamentary cooperation in Abuja from August 25 to 26, 2003.

One of his notable experiences was a three-week/three-states executive-legislative strengthening program for Nigeria in the US, organized by MCID (Massachusetts Consortium for International Development) in the year 2000. This initiative targeted members of The Rivers State House of Assembly and selected members of The Executive Branch, offering valuable insights into legislative and executive functions.

His  commitment to knowledge acquisition showcases his dedication to personal and professional growth across diverse domains.

Political & Entrepreneurial Achievements

Emmanuel Nwiika Deeyah’s impactful career extends into the political and entrepreneurial realms, showcasing a versatile and dynamic leader with a profound commitment to public service and business excellence.

In the political arena, Emmanuel served as an elected member of the Rivers State House of Assembly, demonstrating a keen dedication to legislative matters and public governance. His tenure from January 1992 to November 15th, 1993, saw him rise to the positions of Majority Leader and Deputy Speaker, where he played instrumental roles in shaping legislative initiatives and policies. His leadership left an indelible mark on the political landscape of Rivers State.

Beyond legislative chambers, Emmanuel’s commitment to public service is evident in his role as the Honourable Commissioner for Culture & Tourism from June 1999 to November 2002. Serving under the administration of Dr. Peter Odili, Emmanuel contributed significantly to the promotion of culture and tourism, aligning his efforts with the broader developmental goals of the state.

His dedication to public service continued at the national level, where he served as an elected Member of the House of Representatives at the National Assembly in Abuja from June 2003 to June 2011. During this period, he chaired the House Committee on Public Service Matters & Federal Character (2007–2011) and served as the Sub-Committee Chair on Maritime Safety and Administration (2003–2007). His legislative acumen and strategic thinking were crucial in addressing public service matters and ensuring the equitable distribution of resources.
